I believe this account came from the well researched book “Hitler’s Furies” by Wendy Lower. I believe this is one of the first accounts of Nazi women’s lives during WW2 accounts from letters, journals, interviews and records. There are a collection of letters from teen Polish girls forced to be nannies for camp official’s children available from the Auschwitz museum gift shop.
The phenomenon of outrageous propaganda said in bad faith or said to be ‘only a joke’ and likely contributes to divisiveness, obedience and fear, is found in any authoritarian country.
The newest fascinating book is the result of the 1980s Argentinian dictator (helped to power by CIA, Obama declassified info)
The book is by Haley Cohen Gilliland called “A Flower Traveled in my Blood” and recounts the protests and disappeared Argentinians (pre-med married couple in this case) by groups using ICE tactics, and how the pregnant women were allowed to give birth, breast feed for a few weeks, then brought on a plane, stripped naked and then thrown into the ocean. The children were given to be raised by the MAGA of the time and a group of Grandmothers exposed it all, and continue to find further generations these stolen children.
The children were often raised by parents who blindly obeyed, used corporal punishment (and partner abuse), demanded children to conform
(which stifles intellectual curiosity and discoveries, creates belief in magical thinking and superstitions in the children and culture- IQ is irrelevant for the capacity for discoveries, and multidimensional intellectual accomplishments- for all the genetic superiority nonsense, genes are not relevant if you’ve got a leader in the home or country who is a tyrant, except for creating conspiracy theories, mediocre infrastructure and propaganda)
The children who were eventually found and the grandmothers who never quit looking after their adult children disappeared ,were good enough to share their thoughts and journeys. This book provides a lot of insight into how people are manipulated and affected by authoritarian systems of control.
Great discussion, thank you very much. I wanted to share that I recall reading German Nazi post-WW2 accounts of if they had believed the propaganda. Some said that they didn’t think too much about it, intentionally, because they were so far in. However, they used the Nazi sayings, distorted rationales and other propaganda loudly on repeat in their heads prior to dehumanizing acts or rationalizations for not acting.
