As my journey continues on Hate Comes to Main Street, I will periodically interview other journalists and individuals who are confronting hate in America. I’d love to hear your recommendations, as well.
Christopher Mathias had gone to Charlottesville for the “Unite the Right” rally in 2017 when all hell broke out.
That weekend, neo-Nazi Alex Fields plowed his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
Mathias would later learned that anti-fascist activists had tried to warn authorities that the right-wing crowd was intent on violence; they were even considering the prospect of mowing down counterprotesters with their vehicles.
To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right explores what Republicans and Democrats both get wrong about antifa.
As you’ll see in the video above, Mathias concludes that antifa is real; it just may not be what you’ve been led to believe.
Please watch the interview above, then tell me what you think!
