'Let's Storm the F---ing Capitol': A Conversation with the Filmmaker Behind 'Homegrown'

The conversation explores the themes of community, belonging, and the emotional turmoil stemming from economic inequality. It highlights how individuals are searching for meaning in a fractured world.

Filmmaker Michael Premo, like many who closely track the rise of political extremism in America, can relate to the story of Cassandra from Greek mythology—the prophet fated to see the future but never to be believed.

Embedded with a group of Proud Boys beginning in 2018, Premo saw the future playing out before his eyes—a future that would lead him to follow those characters to Washington, D.C., on January sixth.

His award-winning film “Homegrown” explores what the filmmaker sees as a “crisis of faith” that threatens the core of American democracy. Yet, like Cassandra, Premo finds too many who insist “it’s not that bad, it’s not that bad.”

In this conversation, Premo discusses being pinned inside the Lower West Terrace Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol with the rioters and the economic inequality that he believes is destabilizing America.
